Wing length 7 - 9mm. Medium-large hoverfly with orange antennae and orange, black-ringed tibiae and a dark thorax and abdomen covered in brown hairs.
Grasslands and hedgerows where Ragwort can be found. The larvae develop in the stem-bases and roots of Ragworts.
Status and distribution
Widespread but local in Britain. Fairly common on the reserve.

May to September.
