Description

Over all length 3 - 6mm. These are dark, shiny flies that are difficult to separate to species.

Habitat

The females can be seen feeding from flowers and the larvae feed beneath the bark of recently fallen trees.

Status and distribution

This is a fairly common and widespread genus. The pictures probably show Lonchaea chorea, one of the two commonest British species.
