Thick-legged Hoverfly

Syritta pipiens

Description

Wing length 5 - 7mm. This is a slender species with a swollen hind femur and the sides of the thorax are dusted grey.  The bottom edge of the distal half of the hind femur also has a series of fine teeth.

Habitat

A wide range of open, flowery habitats are used. The larvae develop in decaying vegetable matter in damp, but not wet, situations.

Status and distribution

Very common and widespread over most of Britain, avoiding high, exposed situations.

May to October.
