Gossamer Hoverfly
Baccha elongata
Description
Wing length 4.5 - 8mm. This is a very slender species with a bulbous tip to the abdomen. It is mostly black with two pale bands on the abdomen.
Habitat
Woodland edge and hedgerows with shade and dappled light and lush vegetation. The larvae feed on ground-layer aphids.
Status and distribution
Widespread and common throughout Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and often recorded at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
April to November.
