Description

Wing length 4 - 5mm. A small blackish hoverfly. Normally flies low, over the ground.

Habitat

Dry grasslands. The adults like bedstraw flowers but the larvae feed on ant attended aphids underground, on wild parsnip or willow herb.

Status and distribution

Widespread and fairly common throughout Britain. Common on the reserve.

Best time to see

May to September.
