Hogweed Flutter Fly

Palloptera saltuum

Description

Over all length 5mm. It has an orange body and head with a darker band around its thorax. The wings have a dark border along the leading edge.

Habitat

Hedgerows and woodland edge where the larvae feed by boring into the stems of Hogweed Heracleum spondylium.

Status and distribution

Thinly spread over most of Britain. Recorded twice on the reserve.

Best time to see

Late summer.
