Description

Wing length 6 - 8mm. A robust black species with yellow at the wing bases and dark red eyes. The legs are completely black and the eyes are hairy.

Habitat

A combination of trees and water are preferred either wooded stream sides or carrs. At Netherfield Lagoons they can be found along the Lower Path.

Status and distribution

Fairly common but restricted to the south of Britain, with much fewer records from Scotland. Fairly common in Nottinghamshire and regular at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to September.
