Black-haired Tiger

Nephrotoma guestfalica

Description

Over all length 14 - 17mm. The thorax is light yellow with black markings. The head and abdomen are brown with black marks on the head and dark diamonds on each segment of the abdomen. The final two segments are also dark. The wings have a black stigma.

Habitat

Hedgerows and luxuriant vegetation, often close to rivers.

Status and distribution

Local in southern Britain. Found fairly regularly at the lagoons, close to the Trent.

Best time to see

June to August. Mostly mid-June to early July.
