Grass Long-palp

Tipula vernalis

Description

Over all length 20 - 24mm. Pale buff with dark brown markings on the thorax and a stripe down the dorsal surface of the abdomen. The eyes are green and the wings have dark and light marbling along the front edge.

Habitat

Damp woodland areas and hedgerows.

Status and distribution

Commonest in southern Britain, but extending into Wales and Scotland. Common on the reserve in damp areas.

Best time to see

April to June.
