Large Cigar-gall Fly
Lipara lucens
Description
Over all length 7mm. A heavy set, furry, brown fly with short antennae which are red at the base.
Habitat
Reedbeds where they larvae create cigar shaped galls in the reed stems to live in.
Status and distribution
Uncommon and local, mainly in East Anglia. Fairly common at Netherfield Lagoons, where the cigar-shaped galls are frequently found.
Best time to see
May to June.
