Description

Wingspan 22mm. The fore-wings are iridescent black with yellow and cream spots. The hind-wings and abdomen are scarlet with black markings.

Habitat

Lowlands and marshy ground. The larvae feed on Comfrey, Green Alkanet, Nettles, Meadowsweet, bramble and several other herbaceous plants.

Status and distribution

Local with a tendency towards the south west and Wales. Uncommon in Nottinghamshire but recorded a few times recently. Now recorded regularly at Netherfield.

Best time to see

June to July.
