Knot Grass
Acronicta rumicis
Description
Wingspan 38mm. The forewings are grey with blackish markings. There are one or two white marks two-thirds of the way along the forewing.
Habitat
Open areas like grassland, marshland and gardens. The caterpillars feed on a wide range of plants, including docks, plantains, brambles, Hawthorn and sallows.
Status and distribution
Common and widely distributed in England and Wales, less so in Scotland. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
May to July.
