Description

Wingspan 18 to 22mm. The shape and pattern help the moth to emulate a bird dropping and so avoid predation.

Habitat

Woodland, woodland edge, hedgerows and gardens, the larvae feeding mainly on Blackthorn and Hawthorn.

Status and distribution

Fairly common and widespread throughout Britain but less common in the north of Scotland. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to August.
