Birch Marble

Apotomis betuletana

Description

Wingspan 16 to 20mm. The front two-thirds of the wings are dark, mottled browns and greys. The final third is pale, whitish with some grey markings. The line between dark and light is fairly straight (not curved) and there is only a small white hook into the dark (not a strong hook as in the very similar Apotomis capreana).

Habitat

Found in lightly wooded areas where Birch grows as this is the larval foodplant. The larvae roll birch leaves together to make a shelter.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread throughout the British Isles where Birch grows. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

June to September.
