Willow Beetle

Plagiodera versicolora

Description

Over all size 2.5 to 4.5mm. A small, black beetle with with a green, red or blue metallic sheen. The Elytra are erratically covered with punctures.

Habitat

Damp or marshy places where willow or poplars grow. The adults and their larvae feed on the surfaces of leaves, normally the underside.

Status and distribution

Confined mostly to southern, eastern and midland England. Locally common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

April to August.
