Soldier Beetle

Rhagonycha limbata

Description

Body length 5 to 6mm. A small brown, narrow-bodied beetle. The head and thorax are shiny black, the elytra are duller and the femora are black.

Habitat

Grasslands, woodland edge and hedgerows. The adults and larvae feed on small insects.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread throughout most of Britain except for the Scottish Highlands. Common in Nottinghamshire and recorded once at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to July.
