Varied Carpet Beetle

Description

Body length 2.5 to 3mm. A small beetle with a variable pattern of black, white and ginger markings.

Habitat

The adults can be seen feeding on flowers, particularly umbellifers. The larvae feed on dead organic matter, often in bird nests but will also feed on woollen or cotton fabrics.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread in southern England and Wales, except the West Country. Less common in northern England and Scotland. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to August.
