Spider Hunting Wasp
Arachnospila spissa
Description
Body length 7 - 12mm. This is a red and black wasp that has many very similar species. The photo shows what is probably Arachnospila spissa. The wasp hunts by walking very rapidly over vegetation rather than flying.
Habitat
Open woodland, hedgerows, often on heavier soils.
Status and distribution
Fairly common and widespread in Britain. Fairly common in Nottinghamshire and recorded once at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
May to August.
