Description

Body length 5 to 8mm. A large species, mostly black but the male has a large white face patch.

Habitat

A wide range of habitats is used, including brown-field sites, quarries and grasslands. They are particularly attracted to Mignonettes.

Status and distribution

Mostly restricted to the south and east of Britain, where it is local although often numerous where it does occur. Uncommon in Nottinghamshire and recorded once at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

June to September.
