Chocolate Mining Bee

Description

Body length 11 - 15mm. A honey-bee sized mining bee with a dark body with completely dark sides to the first two abdominal segments. In the female the abdomen has brown hairs while the thorax has more red/brown hairs.

Habitat

A common mining bee of a wide variety of habitats. Can be seen feeding on Blackthorn, Hawthorn and Willow.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread in England, Wales and lowland Scotland. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

March to July.
