Silver Birch Aphid

Euceraphis betulae

Description

Body length 3 - 4mm. The head and thorax are black above and below and the abdomen is yellow or green and it is covered in a bluish/white waxy substance. The abdomen may be marked with blackish transverse blotches or plain depending on which generation it is.

Habitat

Birch trees where they take sap from the leaves or opening buds.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread in Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

April to November.
