Yellow Shadow Ant

Lasius umbratus

Description

Over all length 5 to 8mm. An amber ant, very similar to Lasius flavus.

Habitat

This species is a social parasite, needing to take over the established nest of another species, such as Lasius niger. They spend most of their time underground, feeding on honeydew from root aphids and small soil invertebrates. Nests can in turn be taken over by Lasius fuliginosus.

Status and distribution

Fairly common in southern England. Rare in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons. The colonies discovered that had been appropriated by Lasius fuliginosus were the first recorded in the county for well over 100 years.
