Orthetrum cancellatum
Description
Over all length 44 - 50mm. The male has dark-green eyes, a black thorax and a blue abdomen with a black tip. The female is yellow with two dark longitudinal lines running the length of its abdomen. The female darkens with age. Both sexes are without dark markings at the base of their wings.
Habitat
Lakes and pools with bare or stony patches along their shorelines. Can be found basking on paths or posts around the site.
Status and distribution
Restricted to the southern half of Britain. Fairly common around the reserve where suitable conditions can be found.
Best time to see
Late May to early August.
