Root Fly
Hylemya vagans
Description
Over all length 8 to 8.5mm. A small, dark, well marked fly with all dark legs. There are several similar species so this is probably Hylemya vagans.
Habitat
Woodland, woodland edge, hedgerows where the adults like to perch on sunny leaves. The larvae are thought to develop in dung.
Status and distribution
Common and widespread throughout most of Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
May to August.
