Description
Over all length 11 – 13mm. A ‘Tiger’ Cranefly. The head and thorax are mainly pale yellow with black markings. The sides of the thorax are pale yellow and almost unmarked. The abdomen is light brown with a broad, darker, dusky brown line along its dorsal surface. The tip of the abdomen has a darker segment.
Habitat
Found in damp areas often resting low in bushes or trees.
Status and Distribution
This is a local species that is mainly restricted to the southern half of Britain. Not particularly common but turns up regularly on the reserve.
Best Time to See
July to September.
