Netherfield Wildlife Group was formed in 1999, shortly after Gedling Colliery closed and the
lagoons became redundant. We started to monitor the site and produced annual reports so that the
natural history of the site could be recorded and then protected as Gedling Borough Council began
to make unsympathetic plans to turn it into a country park.
Their plans would have destroyed the
key parts of the site that harboured the most nature. In 2005, Gedling Conservation Trust was
formed to take over ownership and management of the lagoons. Netherfield Wildlife Group
continue to monitor the site.
About the Netherfield Wildlife Group
The group has been going for over a quarter of a century and has produced a quality annual report in every year.
They do monthly Bird-Counts to which anybody is welcome (the website shows when they are and where to meet) and several of its members regularly help with hands-on management work for the Trust. Membership is £6 per annum and members will receive the annual reports as they are produced. The production of the annual reports is wholly dependant on the subscriptions to cover its costs.
