Description
Wingspan 63 – 75mm. The upper-wings are bright, purple-brown with large eye-spots on each wing. The undersides are much darker, the hind-wings almost black.
Habitat
Woodland edge, hedgerows and gardens. The larvae feed on nettles and the adults nectar on a variety of flowers.
Status and Distribution
Common and widespread in England, Wales and lowland Scotland. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best Time to See
March to September.
