Description
Wingspan – 30 – 46mm. The fore-wings are dark, glossed with green or blue, with five red spots. The hind wings are red with a narrow dark border. Normally found flying earlier in the summer than the Six-spot Burnet.
Habitat
Sunny, grassy areas with Bird’s-foot Trefoil and Red Clover available as food plants for the larvae.
Status and Distribution
Common and widespread in most of southern Britain, though uncommon in the south-west and Wales and not very common in Lincolnshire. Rare in Scotland. Fairly common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best Time to See
June to August.
