Description
Wing length 5 – 8mm. There are several very similar insects in this genus, so care should be taken with identification. This species has a shiny brown thorax and a black abdomen marked with yellow comma-shaped (lunulate) spots. The yellow of the markings broadly meets the edges (margins) of the segments.
Habitat
Woodland edge and hedgerows beside open, flowery areas. The larvae feed on ground-layer aphids.
Status and Distribution
Common and widespread throughout Britain. Fairly common in Nottinghamshire and regularly seen at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best Time to See
March to November.
