Description
Wing length 8.5 – 10mm. This is a bumblebee mimic with a black and white appearance and an orange tail. The wings have clouds.
Habitat
Woodland edge and hedgerows. The adults visit umbellifers and the larvae develop in the roots of umbellifers such as Hogweed and Angelica.
Status and Distribution
Common and widespread throughout Britain and Nottinghamshire. Regularly seen at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best Time to See
May to August.
