Description
Wing length 8 – 12mm. A very furry, bumblebee mimic with an orange scutellum, but otherwise a very variable body pattern. Females always have a white tail.
Habitat
Wet woodlands, especially where Sallow is common. The larvae are rat-tailed and develop in ponds in rotting vegetation.
Status and Distribution
Widespread and fairly common throughout Britain. Common on the reserve, look along the Lower Path or near any flowering Sallow.
Best Time to See
March to November.
