Description

Over all length 6 - 8mm. A small greyish fly with black markings and an orange wing base.

Habitat

Woodland edge and hedgerows. The larvae feed on decomposing vegetation.

Status and distribution

Fairly common throughout Britain. Common at the reserve. Often found basking on the fence beside the Wheelchair Ramp.

Best time to see

April to November.
