Down-looker Snipe-fly

Rhagio scolopaceus

Description

Over all length 9 - 15mm. This Snipe-fly has a grey thorax marked with three blackish lines. The abdomen is orange-brown with a black mark on each segment. The male has the last two segments completely black. The wings are patterned with large dark markings.

Habitat

Marshes and damp woodland edge. Found around the Large Gravel Pit and along the Lower Path on the reserve.

Status and distribution

Common and widely distributed through the British Isles. Regularly found on the reserve.

Best time to see

May to August.
