Water Scorpion

Nepa cinerea

Description

Body length 20 - 23mm. A flattened, dark brown bug with the front legs held like a scorpion's claws, and a 10mm breathing tube extending from its abdomen.

Habitat

Weedy pools where it can ambush its prey.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread through most of Britain. Less common in Scotland and the West Country. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.
