Root-fly

Anthomyia procellaris

Description

Over all length 4mm. A small, grey fly with black markings on its thorax. There are two other, very similar species, so care must be taken with identification.

Habitat

Woodland edge and hedgerows. It is associated with damper areas on the reserve.

Status and distribution

Its distribution shows a markedly southern bias in the British Isles. Regular at the reserve, along the Lower Path and Willow Walk.

Best time to see

June to October.
