Large Polietes
Polietes lardarius
Description
Over all length 10mm. A black and grey fly with a striped thorax and patches on its abdomen.
Habitat
Woodland edge and rides, hedgerows. The adults feed on the flowers of Hogweed and Ivy. The larvae feed in cow-pats.
Status and distribution
Common and widespread throughout most of Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
May to October.
