Broad-barred Dasysyrphus
Dasysyrphus venustus
Description
Wing length 6.5 - 10mm. A mainly black hoverfly with a brown scutellum and pale yellow markings on the abdomen. The wing has a long, thin black stigma.
Habitat
Woodland edge and hedgerows. The larvae feed on aphids on bushes and trees.
Status and distribution
Widespread throughout Britain but not particularly common. Found on several sites in Nottinghamshire, including Netherfield Lagoons, from where there are three records.
Best time to see
April to September.
