Dung Fly

Scathophagid species

Description

Body length 6 to 8mm. A small, dark bodied dung fly with a pale head with red eyes which have an orange stripe between them. I was not able to identify this fly to species. It looks very much like Norellisoma spinimanum, but the thorax and abdomen are quite dark, not orange.

Habitat

Damp areas with luxuriant vegetation. The flies were both found running across the leaves of a dock plant.

Best time to see

April to May.
