Description

Wingspan 32 - 40mm. Very variable but normally with yellowish/buff fore-wings marked with reddish/brown and a dark spot near the centre. It has several other closely related and similar species.

Habitat

A variety of habitats are used, where sallows or poplars grow. The caterpillars feed on the catkins of sallows and poplars and, when they are well grown, on docks.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread throughout Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

August to October.
