Orthocephalus saltator
Description
Over all length 4 to 5mm. There are two very similar species of Orthocephalus. Both are black but O.saltator has brown hind tibia. The males are fully winged but the females normally have very reduced wings.
Habitat
Grasslands, field edges and brownfield sites. They feed on Hawkweed and meadow grass.
Status and distribution
Widespread but local throughout Britain. Fairly common in Nottinghamshire and recorded once at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
June to September.
