Gedling Pit Top – Solar Panels

URGENT – PLANNING APPLICATION TO COVER THE TOP OF THE GEDLING PIT SITE WITH SOLAR PANELS

Gedling Borough Council (GBC) has received an application (ref. 2012/1335) to build a solar ‘farm’ at the Gedling pit site. The development would comprise more than 23,000 panels sited on the grassland on the top of the site surrounded by a 2 metre secure fence.

There is no ecological survey or breeding bird survey accompanying the application, only a phase 1 habitat survey and GBC has not asked for an Environmental Impact Assessment to be carried out.

Site notices have been erected and provide an opportunity for members of the public and interested partied to comment on the proposed development.

Full details of the application can be seen at:

Type 2012/1335 into the search box to find the application

You can make a comment via the Comments tab but, as you will see, you will need to register (which is very simple to do) or you can e-mail the planning department at:

The applicants have described the area that would be covered with panels as ‘habitats of limited value’ and in answer to the question; ‘Are there any areas on or around the location which are used by protected, important or sensitive species of fauna or flora e.g. for breeding, nesting, foraging, resting, overwintering, migration, which could be affected?’ they simply said ‘No’.

Yet many bird (and other) species are to be found in the area concerned, including skylarks which breed there, owls and snipe. In December 2011 a rough-legged buzzard was seen daily at the site and proved to be only the second time the species had been seen in Nottinghamshire in the last 50 years.

Many of you will have your own experiences, sightings and information that would be relevant to the site.

If you feel the area deserves to be protected and that this is the wrong location for such a very large development of this type, please get in touch with GBC’s planning department as soon as possible  The deadline for comments is 21 January.

Could you please also let me have copies of anything you send in?

If you would like to be kept in touch on this issue please let me have your e-mail address and/or phone number.

PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ON TO ANYONE ELSE YOU THINK MAY BE INTERESTED.

Many thanks,

Peter Smith
