Cattle Egret – 9th April

This morning there were plenty of hirundines about and Willow, Sedge and Reed Warblers singing. In mid-morning seven Cattle Egrets flew north, along the river and then crossed the pylon path and returned whence they came except for one that landed in a riverside ash tree, where Black-headed Gulls proceeded to mob it. It then flew over the power lines and into a Deep Pit willow, where it stayed. PS.

In the evening four House Martins were seen near the railway bridge. MC.

Red-breasted Merganser – 9th April

This morning, amongst the Shovelers, Teal, Tufted Duck and Gadwall on the Slurry Lagoon were a superb pair of Red-breasted Mergansers. More Sedge Warblers had come in overnight and were singing in the reed beds and a Water Rail was also calling. PS.

Along the Ouse Dyke a Nuthatch was found RW and earlier a Barn Owl was seen LD/PD.

In the afternoon, on the Bird Walk, the Mergansers were still present and a Barn Owl was seen along the Lower Path. Also seen was a Roe Deer that jumped the Slurry Lagoon fence and crossed the path in front of us. PS.

In the late afternoon a Firecrest was found, singing, along the Ouse Dyke. RW.

Redstart – 9th April

This morning a male Redstart was seen in the Plantation, near the Causeway end. A Sedge Warbler was singing down the bank and at least five Willow Warblers were singing around the site. Up to fifteen Chiffchaffs were singing and two Blackcaps, and a Swallow was with the Sand Martins by the railway bridge. At least two Wheatears were still on the ploughed field beyond the Wader Scrape and there was still one Goldeneye on the Large Gravel Pit. A Small Tortoiseshell and a Brimstone were seen in flight. There was also a report of a distant view of a Red Kite, towards Carlton.

Willow Warbler – 9th April

Early this afternoon a Willow Warbler was heard singing by the Causeway in the Deep Pit. TL.

A Lesser Whitethroat was heard and seen near the bench half-way down the North-East side of the Slurry Lagoon late this afternoon and four House Martins were also seen. PB.
