Description

Over all length 10 - 15mm. This is one of the largest mosquitoes. The legs and abdomen are banded dark and light and the wings are spotted.

Habitat

Water margins in a wide range of habitats. The larvae feed on detritus in the water. The adults tend to hide away in hollow trees or dense vegetation, coming out at night.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread throughout Britain. Quite common at the reserve.

Best time to see

Spring to Autumn. Hibernates as an adult.
