Primrose Tiger

Nephrotoma flavescens

Description

Over all length 14 - 18mm. The head and thorax are yellow with black markings, the sides of the thorax have less black on them than the Spotted Cranefly Nephrotoma appendiculata. The abdomen is a darker, orange/yellow with a thin, broken black line along its dorsal surface. The wings have a weak stigma.

Habitat

Hedgerows and grassy areas.

Status and distribution

Common in the southern half of Britain, becoming less so further north. Very common on the reserve.

Best time to see

April to August. Mainly June to July.
