Anax imperator

Description

Over all length 66 - 84mm. The male has green eyes and thorax and a blue abdomen marked by a black dorsal line. The female is normally all green, although there is a blue form, and the black dorsal line is wider. Our largest dragonfly, which flies with a slightly down-curved abdomen.

Habitat

Most types of well vegetated water bodies.

Status and distribution

A fairly common dragonfly with the bulk of the population in the southern half of Britain. Regularly seen defending territories or ovipositing in the gravel pits and the Slurry Lagoon.

Best time to see

Early June to late August.
